High-performing organizations entrust PM training and development to their PMOs, and train in advanced skills.

Our recent State of the PMO study revealed some interesting facts about the importance of project management training.

Over the years, we have seen that more and more PMOs are becoming responsible for training and development functions. Among the 400+ companies that responded to the survey this year, 57% are responsible for project management training delivery, with the vast majority focusing on training in PM basics.

However, when you look only at PMOs in high-performing organizations (high performers are identified in the study by their scores on a number of organizational performance measures), the percentage responsible for training rises significantly, to 70%. In addition, 82% are responsible for project management coaching and mentoring, and 72% are responsible for PM training curriculum development and coordination. And these PMOs place much more emphasis on leadership and business alignment training and advanced PM skill development. They are more likely to evaluate project manager competency and have an established career path in place for project management resources.

We believe that this PMO-led focus on a broader, deeper education in project management is part of the reason these organizations deliver more value. This, along with their focus on higher-order skills, gives their companies a head start now that the improving economy calls for new major initiatives.

How can we help your organization deliver more value?
